  • Safe practices are followed for handling finishes in accordance with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Required OSHA approved personal protective equipment is worn.
  • Required OSHA engineering controls (example, spray booth) are in place and operating.

Pre-Operation Checklist

Level 1

  • Prepares surface to accept repairs

Level 2 - [expectation that work can be performed on site]

  • Prepares work area (if on-site) to protect from over spray, spillage, etc.
  • Ensures adequate ventilation exists and ignition hazards are not present
  • Identifies existing finish coating
  • Identifies species characteristic (related to the potential repair)?
  • Selects compatible repair material(s)

Operation - Soft wax repair

Level 1

Given an exposed nail hole, select and apply soft wax filler(s)
Performance Standard -

  • Color blend is inconspicuous at 6 feet in normal lighting conditions

Level 2

Given an exposed nail hole, select and apply soft wax filler(s)
Performance Standard -
  • Hole is filled flush with surrounding surface
  • Color blend is inconspicuous at 3 feet in normal lighting conditions

Operation - Color pen repair

Level 1

Level 1 - (Note: applies only to vertical/inconspicuous surfaces, i.e. cabinet sides, door backs, table aprons, etc, repaired in plant)

Given a damaged panel (nail holes, gouges which have penetrated through surface finish, minor color imperfections), touch up panel using soft wax and/or color pens/markers, and apply appropriate surface sealant (if required)

[GH] Given a damaged area, (vertical/inconspicuous surfaces, cabinet sides, door backs, table aprons, etc.) repair in the plant (nail holes, gouges which have penetrated through surface finish, minor color imperfections), touch up area using , and apply appropriate surface sealant (as required).
Performance Standard -
  • Repaired using soft wax and/or color pens/markers
  • Defect is inconspicuous at 3'
  • Defects are filled level with surface
  • Color match is consistent with surrounding area

Level 2 - (Note: applies to all prominent surfaces, especially door fronts, table tops, etc)

Given a damaged panel (nail holes, gouges which have penetrated thru surface finish, cross-grain scratches, color imperfections), select appropriate materials (burn in sticks, color pigments, surface sealants/top coats with appropriate sheen) to repair defects

Performance Standard -
  • Surface sheen and coating build (thickness) are consistent with surrounding area
  • Defect is re-grained to match surrounding area
  • Meets Level 1 performance standards

Level 3 - (Note: applies to items such as pianos, musical instruments, boat work)

Given a high gloss damaged panel (Polyester or Urethane finish), select appropriate materials (filing material, color pigments, surface sealants/top coats) to repair defects
