7.9 Stroke Sander

Considerations

  • Pre-Operation Checklist is a prerequisite for ANY operation.
  • Idler and driven drum bearings are functioning properly.
  • Auxiliary tables are available and adjusted to correct height/angle.
  • Guides material into contact with moving belt smoothly and gradually.
  • Proper stance and hand position are demonstrated.
  • Stock is held securely against the fence or fixture as appropriate.
  • Uses low level cross light to check finish.
  • Clears machine and cleans work area after operation.
  • Required OSHA approved personal protective equipment is worn.
  • Lock-out/Tag-out procedure is in place and followed.
  • Process is completed in a timely manner.


Pre-Operation Checklist

Level 1

Performance Standard -
  • Verifies belt is properly tensioned, sharp and tracking correctly.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and proper use of all machine specific controls.
  • Verifies table is at correct height and locked.
  • Cleans belt if needed
  • Verifies work area is clean, organized and free from tripping hazards.

Level 2

Performance Standard -
  • Installs new belt.
  • Adjusts tension and tracking.
  • Adjusts table height.
  • Meets Level 1 performance standard.

7.9.1 - Sand Flat Panel

Level 1

Given panel and machine set up and ready to work, sand the surface of a panel with a minimum area of one square foot.
Performance Standard -
  • A dimensional tolerance of ±1.5 mm (1/16") [0.0625"] from flat is maintained across entire length
  • Edges are crisp, no apparent round over
  • Surface has no skips, burns, or wash boarding or snipes
  • All mill/saw marks are removed

Level 2

Given panel and machine, set up sander with a sharp belt of the appropriate coarseness and properly adjust table and sanding block, and sand the material.
Performance Standard -
  • Meets Level 1 performance standard

7.9.2 - Sand Shaped Panel

Level 1

Given panel and machine set up and ready to work, sand the surface of a shaped panel with a minimum area of one square foot.
Performance Standard -
  • A dimensional tolerance of ±1.5 mm (1/16") [0.0625"] is maintained across entire shape
  • Edge profiles, if any, are maintained, no apparent distortion
  • All mill/saw marks are removed
  • Shaped Panel has no skips, burns or washboarding or snipes

Level 2

Given panel and machine, set up sander with a jig, sharp belt of the appropriate coarseness, and properly adjust table and sanding block, and sand the material.
Performance Standard -
  • Fabricate jig to hold workpiece
  • Provide positive positioning and locking for workpiece
  • Meets Level 1 performance standards
