4.6 Single-end Tenoner

Considerations

  • Pre-Operation Checklist is a prerequisite for ANY operation.
  • All cutters are properly installed and torqued to prevent ejection of cutter during operation (according to manufacturer's instructions).
  • Blank is properly positioned and loaded in machine.
  • Stock is firmly held in sliding table by clamping system.
  • Stock is fed in smooth continuous motion past cut off saw, tenoning, and coping heads.
  • Stock and table are returned to the start position with a smooth continuous motion.
  • The sliding table and machined piece are held back from the cutters when being removed from the machine and when loading next blank.
  • Operator clears machine and cleans work area after operation.
  • Required OSHA approved personal protective equipment is worn.
  • Lock-out/Tag-out procedure is in place and followed.
  • Procedure is completed in a timely manner.

Pre-Operation Checklist

Level 1

Performance Standard -
  • Verifies Machine is properly guarded and covered
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and proper use of all machine specific controls
  • Verifies cut-off saw, tenoning heads, and coping heads are powered up and rotating correctly
  • Verifies fence liner is properly installed to disclose exact location of tenoning operation on workpiece
  • Verifies dust collection operable/operating

Level 2

Performance Standard -
  • Adjusts position of cut-off saw
  • Adjusts distance between tenoning heads
  • Adjusts distance between coping heads
  • Adjusts height of sliding table
  • Adjusts tension on cam-type clamping system
  • Adjusts and locks the fence angle
  • Meets Level 1 performance standard

4.6.1 - Tenoning

Level 1

Given a blank which is perfectly square in section 45 mm x 45 mm (1.75" x 1.75") and 762 mm (30") long, and a pre-set machine, produce a tenon to a specified length.
Performance Standard -
  • Dimension tolerance is ±0.4 mm (1/64") [0.0156"] to the required length
  • Machined surfaces exhibit uniform mill marks with no machine burn marks
  • Cut is free of tear-out on trailing surface

Level 2

Given a blank which is perfectly square in section 45 mm x 45 mm (1.75" x 1.75") and 762 mm (30") long, and a machine with cut-off saw, tenoning cutters and coping cutters correctly installed, adjust the saw, tenoning and coping heads and table height to produce a coping profile to fit a prepared sample of a matching mortise and edge (stick) profile.
Performance Standard -
  • Dimension tolerance is ±0.4 mm (1/64") [0.0156"] maximum gap where any of the matching surfaces meet
  • Tenon is 3 mm (1/8") shorter than depth of supplied mortise sample
  • Meets Level 1 performance standard
