  • Required OSHA approved personal protective equipment is worn.
  • Tool/Machine Manufacturer's safety rules and guidelines are followed.
  • Verifies tool is properly guarded.
  • Proper stance and hand position are demonstrated.
  • Inspect for evidence of chatter marks or part hesitation.
  • Spot checks results following the operation.
  • If required select proper program from controller or Programmable Logic Controller (PLC).
  • Operator clears machine and cleans work area after use.
  • Lock-out/Tag-out procedure is in place and followed.
  • Process in completed in a timely manner.

Pre-Operation Checklist

Level 1

Performance Standard -
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and proper use of all machine specific controls.
  • Verifies material profile meets process standard.
  • Ensures dust collection is functioning.
  • Ensures proper air pressure is supplied (when air is used).
  • Inspects abrasive condition.
  • Inspects feed and process motors.
  • Ensures paths of in-feed and out-feed have no obstructions to material and operator.

Level 2

Performance Standard -
  • Powers up machine and verifies proper operating speeds and through feed.
  • Selects and installs proper abrasive(s) for given task and material.
  • Sets beam height to within 0.1 mm [0.0039’’] based on product dimensions.
  • Enables correct stations for given material/process/product.
  • Meets Level 1 performance standard.

7.8.1 - Sanding Solid Wood Profile

Level 1

Given machine set up, adjusted, with abrasives and material ready to sand, feed parts into machine.
Performance Standard -
  • Feeds parts into machine properly.
  • Sands faces in proper sequence.
  • Dimensional tolerance ±.0.4 mm (1/64") [0.0156"]
  • No apparent dips or snipe created by sanding operation
  • All scratches, nicks and defects are removed
  • Sanding marks are consistent
  • No evidence of edge/end-dubbing
  • Identifies basic material and processing defects.
  • Routes parts requiring rework appropriately.

Level 2

Given material, set up machine and sand to specifications.
Performance Standard -
  • Loads program and/or adjusts machine for given material.
  • Sets up and adjusts all processing stations.
  • Select appropriate grit and composition of sanding belts to complete operation.
  • Ensure sanding belts are installed on the device to maximize paper life.
  • Corrects basic processing defects.
  • Verifies parts exhibit acceptable finished surface.
  • Powers down machine in accordance with machine manual.
  • Meets Level 1 performance standard.
