10.3 Pneumatic Nailers

(Finish, Brad, Pin & Staplers)
The type of nailer used in shop for fine woodwork, as opposed to a #8 Common nail gun used to install roof sheathing, for example,

Considerations

  • Pre-Operation Checklist is a prerequisite for ANY operation.
  • Operator cleans tool and work area after use.
  • Required OSHA approved personal protective equipment is worn.
  • Lock-out/Tag-out procedure is in place and followed.
  • Process is completed in a timely manner.

Pre-Operation Checklist

Level 1

Performance Standard -
  • Verifies stock is properly clamped (if required).
  • Demonstrates proper holding of tool to prevent accidental injury
  • Loads fasteners as needed.

Level 2

Performance Standard -
  • Adjusts tool depth setting if equipped/required.
  • Clears jams when necessary
  • Lubricates tool as/if required
  • Meets Level 1 performance standard.

10.3.1 - Fasten 19 mm (3/4") [0.75"] particle board components in a 90 degree assembly

Level 1

Given material clamped and ready to fasten, drive series (not less than three) of fasteners through particle board to create a 90° joint.
Performance Standard -
  • Fasteners are driven straight
  • Fasteners are held back from edge enough to minimize material bulge
  • Edge and face of perpendicular parts are fastened flush to a dimension tolerance of ±0.4 mm (1/64") [0.0156"]
  • No head repercussion marks are apparent

Level 2

Given material and clamps, clamp parts and drive a series (not less than three) of fasteners through particle board to create a 90° joint.
Performance Standard -
  • Aligns material and applies clamps with proper pressure to hold material in place without compressing faces
  • Meets level 1 performance standard

10.3.2 - Fasten 19 mm (3/4") [0.75"] solid wood components in a 90 degree assembly

Level 1

Given material clamped and ready to fasten, drive series (not less than three) of fasteners through solid wood to create a 90° joint.
Performance Standard -
  • Care is taken to avoid driving fasteners into gnarled or knotted grain
  • Fasteners are driven straight
  • Fasteners are held back from edge enough to minimize material fracture
  • Edge and face of perpendicular parts are fastened flush to a dimension tolerance of ±0.4 mm (1/64") [0.0156"]
  • No head repercussion marks are apparent

Level 2

Given material and clamps, clamp parts and drive a series (not less than three) of fasteners through particle board to create a 90° joint.
Performance Standard -
  • Aligns material and applies clamps with proper pressure to hold material in place without compressing faces
  • Meets level 1 performance standard

10.3.3 - Fasten 19 mm (3/4") [0.75"] solid wood components in a 45 degree assembly

Level 1

Given material clamped and ready to fasten, drive series (not less than three) of fasteners through solid wood to create a 45° joint.
Performance Standard -
  • Care is taken to avoid driving fasteners into gnarled or knotted grain
  • Fasteners are driven straight
  • Fasteners are held back from edge enough to minimize material fracture
  • Edges of mitered parts are fastened flush to a dimension tolerance of ±0.4 mm (1/64") [0.0156"]
  • No head repercussion marks are apparent

Level 2

Given material and clamps, clamp parts and drive a series (not less than three) of fasteners through particle board to create a 90° joint.
Performance Standard -
  • Aligns material and applies clamps with proper pressure to hold material in place without compressing faces
  • Meets level 1 performance standard
