4.4 Overhead Pin Router

Considerations

  • Pre-Operation Checklist is a prerequisite for ANY operation.
  • Stock is fed manually in a smooth continuous motion against the direction of the cutter rotation (Conventional cutting)
  • Point of operation guard is correctly positioned above the work piece
  • Spindle is set to proper rotational speed/direction
  • Pneumatic foot pedal (if equipped) is correctly positioned for operator
  • Proper stance and hand position are demonstrated
  • Workpiece bears firmly on fence or guide pin as required
  • Machine is cleared of dust and offcuts after machining cycle
  • Required OSHA approved personal protective equipment is worn
  • Lock-out/tag-out procedure is in place and followed
  • Process is completed in a timely manner

Pre-Operation Checklist

Performance Standard -

Level 1

  • Verifies cutter is properly installed and guarded with point of operation guard
  • Demonstrates knowledge and proper use of start switch, speed selector and foot pedal
  • Verifies dust collector operating
  • Raises and lowers quill to enter and exit workpiece
  • Selects proper feed direction for internal and external cuts

Level 2

  • Selects and properly installs correct cutter
  • Selects and adjusts graduated quill depth stops
  • Selects and installs correct guide pin or fence
  • Loads blank correctly in pattern/template
  • Meets level 1 performance standard

4.4.1 - Pattern/Template Routing

Level 1

Given a prepared pattern designed to follow a pin bearing on one jig surface, load a blank in the template and machine a part with curved edges.
Performance Standard -
  • Dimension tolerance is ±0.4 mm (1/64") [0.0156"] along the entire curved edge
  • The pattern does not come into contact with the cutter
  • Machined surface exhibits a uniform smoothness between 15-25 knife cuts per inch (KCPI).
  • Cut part does not exhibit tear out or burning

Level 2

Given a prepared pattern designed to follow a pin bearing on one jig surface, install tooling, load a blank in the template and machine a part with internal and external curved edges.
Performance Standard -
  • Secures templates appropriately to materials so as not to impede operation of tool.
  • Selects correct depth of cut according to machining requirements.
  • Meets Level 1 performance standard.
