3.7 Moulder (Engineered Flooring)

Considerations

  • Pre-Operation Checklist is a prerequisite for ANY operation.
  • Stock is supported at infeed and out-feed.
  • Verifies cutting tools are secure and free of defects
  • Verifies spindle height and/or angle are set to specified dimension(s)
  • Proper feed rate is selected to obtain desired finish and maximize tool life.
  • Proper stance and hand position are demonstrated when feeding/offloading material.
  • Warpage is considered for feed and to minimize tear-out.
  • Clears machine and cleans work area after operation.
  • Required OSHA approved personal protective equipment is worn.
  • Lock-out/Tag-out procedure is in place and followed.
  • Process is completed in a timely manner.

Pre-Operation Checklist

Level 1

Performance Standard -
  • Verifies cutter heads are properly guarded and other related safety covers/doors are in position
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and proper operation of all machine specific controls
  • Ensures paths of in-feed and out-feed have no obstructions to material and operator
  • Verifies chip breakers are secure and operating effectively
  • Verifies hold-downs are positioned correctly for clearance and proper material feeding
  • Verifies dust collection is positioned and baffles are adjusted for effective chip removal
  • Verifies anti-kick back devices (if equipped) are in position and operational
  • Verifies hydro grip sleeves or tools (when used) are pressurized and in good working condition
  • Verifies infeed timber height control gate is in position to prevent double feeding of material
  • Verifies linear measurement meter setting, when equipped

Level 2

Performance Standard -
  • Sets and secures fences, chip breakers, pressure shoes, and tables
  • Sets infeed fence and table for appropriate material removal
  • Installs cutting tools and verifies cutter orientation with respect to rotation
  • Installs and secures feed wheels in proper rotational direction
  • Adjusts feed beam height and pressure correctly for clearance and proper material feeding
  • Installs, adjusts and secures outboard bearings if equipped
  • Adjusts automated in-feeding and out-feeding devices according to product dimensions and required feed speeds
  • Adjusts and verifies cutter head clearance and alignment to infeed and outfeed pressure elements
  • Calculates feed rate to achieve specified finish quality based on spindle RPM, feed speed, and number of effective knives
  • Sets tooling & profile specifications in computer (if applicable)
  • Meets Level 1 performance standard

3.7.1 - Three sided finished profile

Level 1

Given stock prepared to feed, and a machine set up to create product within specified tolerances, feed stock into moulder.
Performance Standard -
  • Demonstrates correct feeding procedures
  • Measures machined material for specified thickness and width ± 0.076 mm [0.003"]
  • Measures machined material for specified tongue and groove placement ± 0.076 mm [0.003"]
  • Checks material with template or gauge for any other pattern placement
  • Shuts down the machine if an unsafe condition occurs
  • Contacts supervisor to remedy machine caused defects and/or malfunctions

Level 2

Given stock prepared to feed, set up the machine to create product within specified tolerances, then feed stock into moulder.
Performance Standard -
  • Starts spindles and feed wheels in proper sequence
  • Identifies unusual sounds at start-up that may indicate unsafe conditions
  • Resets/adjusts setup to remove machine caused defects
  • Removes cutter head and installs new one, verifying cutter orientation with respect to rotation
  • Sets and secures chip breakers, pressure shoes, table plates, and adjustable fences to proper setting and distance respective to tools cutting diameter
  • Verifies spindle radial and axial position and/or angle are set to specified dimension(s) to produce required profile
  • Adjusts infeed table and fence for product straightening applications were applicable
  • Assures dimensional tolerance(s) meets product specifications
  • Resets/adjusts set-up to remove machine caused defects
  • Meets Level 1 performance standards
