3.1 Jointer

Considerations

  • Pre-Operation Checklist is a prerequisite for ANY operation.
  • Safe hand position and/or push blocks are used when appropriate.
  • Appropriate stance is utilized for optimum balance and part control.
  • Stock is fed in smooth, continuous motion past cutter head.
  • Grain direction as well as bow/warp are correctly identified and appropriately considered for feed.
  • Out-feed table is appropriately utilized for purposes of facing/straightening.
  • Stock is supported at out-feed.
  • Machine and work area are cleaned after operation.
  • Required OSHA approved personal protective equipment is worn.
  • Lock-out/Tag-out procedure is in place and followed.
  • Process is completed in a timely manner.

Pre-Operation Checklist

Level 1

Performance Standard -
  • Verifies tool is properly guarded.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and proper use of all machine specific controls.
  • Verifies in-feed and out-feed tables are free of debris prior to machining.
  • Ensures dust collection operable/operating.

Level 2

Performance Standard -
  • Inspects knives for wear or defects.
  • Installs and/or properly adjusts guard.
  • Verifies and/or properly adjusts fence 90º to in-feed/out-feed tables.
  • Verifies out-feed table is set to manufacturer's specification.
  • Sets depth of cut appropriately.
  • Verifies tables are clean and polished to facilitate smooth material movement.
  • Meets Level 1 performance standard.

3.1.1 - Face Jointing

Level 1

Given rough sawn, unjointed material 900-1200 mm (3-4') long and a width of 100-150 mm (4-6"), a target thickness, and machine set up and ready to cut, face joint material.
Performance Standard
  • Face deviation does not exceed ±.0.4 mm (1/64") [0.0156"] per foot from a flat plane.
  • Face jointed thickness allows for final processing to target thickness.
  • Machined surface exhibits a uniform smoothness between 15-25 knife cuts per inch (KCPI).
  • Board exhibits minimal tear out.
  • Board is free of snipe.
  • No burn or hesitation marks are visible on surface being machined.
  • Face is marked to indicate jointed surface.

Level 2

Given rough sawn, unjointed material at least twice the length of out-feed table and a width of 100-150 mm (4-6"), a minimum target thickness, set up and adjust machine, face joint material.
Performance Standard
  • Meets Level 1 performance standard.

3.1.2 - Edge Jointing 1st Edge

Level 1

Given material jointed one face and rough sawn edge, 900-1200 mm (3-4') long and a width of 100-150 mm (4-6"), a minimum target width, and machine set up and ready to cut, edge joint first edge.
Performance Standard -
  • Edge is 90° to face of board, measured along entire edge.
  • Edge deviation does not exceed ±.0.4 mm (1/64") [0.0156"] from a flat plane.
  • Edge jointed width allows for final processing to target width.
  • Machined surface exhibits a uniform smoothness between 15-25 knife cuts per inch (KCPI).
  • Edge is free of snipe.
  • No burn or hesitation marks are visible on surface being machined.

Level 2

Given material jointed one face and rough sawn edge, at least twice the length of out-feed table, a minimum target width, set up and adjust machine, edge joint first edge.
Performance Standard
  • Meets Level 1 performance standard.

3.1.3 - Rabbeting

Level 1

Given material with one jointed face and one jointed edge, a specified rabbet dimension, and machine set up and ready to cut, rabbet material.
Performance Standard -
  • Rabbet dimension meets specifications ±.0.4 mm (1/64") [0.0156"] along entire length of rabbet
  • Machined surface exhibits a uniform smoothness between 15-25 knife cuts per inch (KCPI).
  • Rabbet is free of snipe or taper.
  • No burn or hesitation marks are present

Level 2

Given material with one jointed face and one jointed edge, a specified rabbet dimension, set up and adjust machine to rabbet material.
Performance Standard -
  • Guard is removed and properly stored
  • Sets depth of cut appropriately for material being rabbeted
  • Adjusts fence appropriately for material being rabbeted
  • Meets Level 1 performance standard.

3.1.4 - Chamfering

Level 1

Given material with one jointed face and one jointed edge, a specified chamfer dimension and angle, and machine set up and ready to cut, chamfer material.
Performance Standard -
  • Chamfer dimension meets specifications ±.0.4 mm (1/64") [0.0156"] for width and ±0.5° for angle along entire length of chamfer
  • Machined surface exhibits a uniform smoothness between 15-25 knife cuts per inch (KCPI)
  • Chamfer is free of snipe or taper
  • No burn or hesitation marks are visible on edge being machined

Level 2

Given material with one jointed face and one jointed edge, a specified chamfer dimension and angle, set up and adjust machine, chamfer material.
Performance Standard -
  • Sets depth of cut appropriately for material being chamfered
  • Adjusts fence appropriately for material being chamfered
  • Meets Level 1 performance standard

3.1.5 - Beveling

Level 1

Given material with one jointed face and one jointed edge, a specified bevel angle, and machine set up and ready to cut, bevel material.
Performance Standard -
  • Bevel dimension meets specifications ±0.5° for angle along entire length of bevel
  • Machined surface exhibits a uniform smoothness between 15-25 knife cuts per inch (KCPI)
  • Bevel is free of snipe or taper
  • No burn or hesitation marks are visible on edge being machined

Level 2

Given material with one jointed face and one jointed edge, a specified bevel angle, set up and adjust machine, bevel material.
Performance Standard -
  • Sets depth of cut appropriately for material being beveled
  • Adjusts fence appropriately for material being beveled
  • Meets Level 1 performance standard

3.1.6 - Tapering

Level 1 - N/A

Level 2

Given material with one jointed face and one jointed edge, a specified taper, set up and adjust machine, taper (single or stop taper) material to specified dimensions.
Performance Standard -
  • Taper is accurate to within ±.0.4 mm (1/64") [0.0156"]
  • Machined surface exhibits a uniform smoothness between 15-25 knife cuts per inch (KCPI)
  • Tapered surface is free of snipe
  • Depth of cut is set appropriately for material being tapered
  • No burn or hesitation marks are visible on edge being machined

3.1.7 - Edge Relishing

Level 1

Given material, and machine set up, relish board to specifications.
Performance Standard -
  • Relished end of board (or panel) is accurate to within ±0.8 mm (1/32") [0.0312"] (length) and ±.0.4 mm (1/64") [0.0156"] (depth).
  • Removes material from moving cutter safely
  • Material is free of tearout

Level 2

Given material, set the machine up, relish board to specifications.
Performance Standard -
  • Sets depth of cut appropriately for material being relished
  • Adjusts fence for given operation
  • Installs stop block to achieve desired relish length
  • Meets Level 1 performance standard
