3.9 Horizontal Spindle Moulder

Considerations

  • Pre-Operation Checklist is a prerequisite for ANY operation.
  • Ensures paths of in-feed and out-feed have no obstructions to material and operator
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and proper operation of all machine specific controls.
  • Stock is supported at infeed and out-feed.
  • Verifies cutting tool(s) are secure and free of defects
  • Verifies spindle height and/or angle are set to specified dimension(s)
  • Proper feed rate is selected to obtain desired finish and maximize tool life.
  • Proper stance and hand position are demonstrated when feeding/offloading material.
  • Warpage is considered for feed and to minimize tear-out.
  • Clears machine and cleans work area after operation.
  • Shuts down the machine if an unsafe condition occurs.
  • Required OSHA approved personal protective equipment is worn.
  • Lock-out/Tag-out procedure is in place and followed.
  • Process is completed in a timely manner.

Pre-Operation Checklist

Level 1

Performance Standard -
  • Verifies cutter(s) are properly guarded and other related safety covers/doors are in position.
  • Verifies chip breakers are secure and operating effectively.
  • Verifies hold-downs are positioned correctly for clearance and proper material feeding.
  • Verifies dust collection is positioned and baffles are adjusted for effective chip removal.
  • Verifies anti-kick back devices (if equipped) are in position and operational.

Level 2

Performance Standard -
  • Sets and secures fences, chip breakers, pressure shoes, and tables.
  • Sets infeed fence and table for appropriate material removal.
  • Installs cutting tools and verifies cutter orientation with respect to rotation.
  • Adjusts and verifies cutter head clearance and alignment to infeed and outfeed pressure elements
  • Calculates feed rate to achieve specified finish quality based on spindle RPM, feed speed, and cutting tool(s).
  • Meets Level 1 performance standard

3.9.1 - Single sided profile

Level 1

Given machine already set up, adjusted, with material ready, machine material for single sided profile.
Performance Standard -
  • Feeds material to minimize waste.
  • Demonstrates correct lumber feeding procedures.
  • Lubricates bed at proper intervals.
  • Identifies machine caused defects.
  • Measures material for specified thickness and width.
  • Checks material with template or gauge for pattern placement.
  • Contacts supervisor to remedy machine caused defects and/or malfunctions

Level 2

Given machine, tooling, and materials, set up, adjust, and machine material for single sided profile.
Performance Standard -
  • Resets/adjusts setup to remove machine caused defects
  • Removes cutter head and installs new one, verifying cutter orientation with respect to rotation
  • Sets and secures chip breakers, pressure shoes, table plates, and adjustable fences to proper setting and distance respective to tools cutting diameter
  • Assures dimensional tolerance(s) meets product specifications
  • Resets/adjusts set-up to remove machine caused defects
  • Meets Level 1 performance standards
