7.6 Stationary Disk Sander

Considerations

  • Pre-Operation Checklist is a prerequisite for ANY operation.
  • Bearings are functioning properly.
  • Auxiliary table(s) are available and adjusted to correct height/angle.
  • Guides material into contact with moving disk smoothly and gradually using stop block/fence.
  • Proper stance and hand position are demonstrated.
  • Stock is held securely against the fence, miter gauge, or fixture as appropriate.
  • Clears machine and cleans work area after operation.
  • Part is fed against disk rotation when not using a support block
  • Required OSHA approved personal protective equipment is worn.
  • Lock-out/Tag-out procedure is in place and followed.
  • Process in completed in a timely manner.

Pre-Operation Checklist

Level 1

Performance Standard -
  • Verifies disk is properly secured, sharp and rotating correctly.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and proper use of all machine specific controls.
  • Verifies table is at correct height and locked.
  • Cleans disk if needed.
  • Verifies that stop block/fence is at proper angle and securely clamped.
  • Verifies work area is clean, organized and free from tripping hazards.

Level 2

Performance Standard -
  • Installs new disk.
  • Adjusts table height to utilize fresh disk surface.
  • Meets Level 1 performance standard.

7.6.1 - Sand 45º or any Angle

Level 1

Given a disk sander with a sharp disk of the proper grit and properly adjusted table, stop block, and a special jig or fixture equipped with toggle clamps or other positive clamping device, sand the appropriate surface(s) of a board.
Performance Standard -
  • A dimensional tolerance of ±1.5 mm (1/16") [0.0625"] from flat is maintained across entire surface.
  • A tolerance of ±0.5 degrees is maintained from the adjacent surface.
  • Edges are crisp, no apparent round over
  • All mill/saw marks are removed
  • Edge has no skips, burns, wash boarding or snipes

Level 2

Given a disk sander, install an appropriate sharp disk, properly adjust table and stop block, and using a special jig or fixture equipped as in Level 1, sand the appropriate surface(s) of a board.
Performance Standard -
  • Meets Level 1 performance standards

7.6.2 - Sand 90º End Of Board

Level 1

Given machine set up and ready to work, sand the straight, 90º end of a solid piece or board.
Performance Standard -
  • A tolerance of ±0.5 degrees is maintained from the adjacent surface.
  • End is crisp and straight, no apparent round over.
  • End has no skips, burns, wash boarding or snipes.
  • All mill/saw marks are removed.

Level 2

Given a solid piece or board, set up the disk sander with a sharp disk of the appropriate coarseness and properly adjust table and stop block, and sand the material.
