Bar Clamp - Level 1

Operation - Gluing Edge-to-Edge (Butt joint)

Criteria/Performance Standard - Given - Boards with One or Both Edges Joined, Appropriate number of clamps, Glue, Space for Assembly, Space for Assembled Work to Dry, and Space for Completed Work
Evaluation -
  • Correct amount of glue applied to joint, and correct amount of pressure applied with clamps, as measured by correct amount of glue squeeze out at joint - discussion required about this item each time it occurs - - gheuer gheuer Jan 11, 2008
  • Faces of boards aligned at joint .062"+/-
  • Maintain parallel alignment of faces (alternate placement of clamps top and bottom)
  • Joint to be tight--no opening larger than permitted by AWI grade--with proper clamp spacing
  • Match color and grain per AWI grade requirements
  • Align grain to minimize tear-out
  • Alternate orientation of faces--bark side up, bark side down, etc. - is this always a requirement? - - gheuer gheuer Jan 11, 2008
  • Excess glue squeeze carefully removed
  • If boards are to be stained, glue squeeze out removed before it can seal the face and prevent proper penetration of stain

Operation - Gluing Edge-to-Edge (Bisquit Joint)

Criteria/Performance Standard - Given - Boards with One or Both Edges Joined, Appropriate number of clamps, Bisquit Jointer, Proper Bisquits, Glue, Space for Assembly, Space for Assembled Work to Dry, and Space for Completed Work
Evaluation -
  • Correct amount of glue applied to joint, and correct amount of pressure applied with clamps, as measured by correct amount of glue squeeze out at joint
  • Faces of boards aligned at joint .015"+/- (bisquits properly spaced and aligned)
  • Excess glue squeeze carefully removed
  • If boards are to be stained, glue squeeze out removed before it can seal the face and prevent proper penetration of stain

Operation - Gluing Edge-to-Edge (Profiled Glue Joint )

Criteria/Performance Standard - Given - Boards with One or Both Edges Worked to Correct Profile, Appropriate number of clamps, Glue, Space for Assembly, Space for Assembled Work to Dry, and Space for Completed Work
Evaluation -
  • Correct amount of glue applied to joint, and correct amount of pressure applied with clamps, as measured by correct amount of glue squeeze out at joint
  • Faces of boards aligned at joint .015"+/-
  • Maintain parallel alignment of faces (alternate placement of clamps top and bottom)
  • Joint to be tight--no opening larger than permitted by AWI grade--with proper clamp spacing
  • Match color and grain per AWI grade requirements
  • Excess glue squeeze carefully removed
  • If boards are to be stained, glue squeeze out removed before it can seal the face and prevent proper penetration of stain

Operation - Gluing Face-to-Face

Criteria/Performance Standard - Given - Boards of proper width with One or Both Faces Joined, Appropriate number of clamps, Glue, Space for Assembly, Space for Assembled Work to Dry, and Space for Completed Work
Evaluation -
  • Correct amount of glue applied to joint, and correct amount of pressure applied with clamps, as measured by correct amount of glue squeeze out at joint
  • Edges of boards aligned at joint .125"+/-
  • Joint to be tight--no opening larger than permitted by AWI grade--with proper clamp spacing
  • Match color and grain per AWI grade requirements
  • Align grain to minimize tear-out
  • Excess glue squeeze carefully removed
  • If boards are to be stained, glue squeeze out removed before it can seal the face and prevent proper penetration of stain
